Miles of Pennies for Childhood Cancer

Mid-Prairie elementary schools have chosen to take part in the Miles of Pennies for Childhood Cancer CampaignDid you know that each year more than 12,000 children and teenagers will be diagnosed with cancer? Did you also know that one in every 330 Americans develops cancer before the age of 20? Due to statistics such as these, Optimist Clubs are encouraged to participate in this program by building awareness of the disease, providing assistance to childhood cancer patients and their families and supporting research to find a cure.

What can Kalona Elementary students do to help
  • Throughout the month of September students at KE are encouraged to bring their “pennies” to place in a jug in their classroom. (other coins will be accepted)
  • All money raised will go to the Johns Hopkins University to support their Childhood Cancer Campaign
  • A pizza party will be provided to the class who brings the most “pennies”.
  • 16 pennies placed side-by-side = 1 foot
  • 5,280 feet = 1 mile
  • One Mile of pennies = 84,480 = $844.80
